Tips

This is another variation on the "misc" module and some useful tips when using the Karma Design Wizard.
More Tips:
  • Creating Repeating Backgrounds
  • Saving Graphics For The Web
  • Layout Styles
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Margin Vs. Padding
  • Saving Transparent Images in Photoshop
How can you create a an image that seamlessly repeats in the background? I've never had much success with the pattern makers in Photoshop so I do it manually. However, it's rather simply, really. Let's start with one you might assume was difficult - a brick wall.
Convert Background To Layer
First convert your background to a layer. I do this by double clicking on the little lock icon next the layer in the layer window. It will ask you to name your new layer. You can name it whatever you'd like. I called mine "brickwall".
Select a piece of your image.
2. With the rectangular select tool select a piece of your image. Be sure you get the entire image from top to bottom. Cut it and paste it. This will automatically make a new layer with your cut piece.
Align Layer
Drag your new piece and make sure it's aligned all the way to the left side. This is easier if you have "snap" on. You can do this by selecting "snap" under the "View" tab.
Add a mask
Add a mask to your new layer. You can do this by clicking the square icon with the circle inside that is to the immediate right of the "f" with the circle around it.
Gradient Settings
5. Select your gradient tool. It's in the same button as the fill tool that looks like a paint bucket. If the paint bucket is showing, click and hold down the button until you see the gradient icon. Make sure your gradient is set to go from black to transparent.
Apply Gradient To Mask
Select the mask on your new layer by clicking on it in the layer window.
Create a gradient that goes from the left side to the right side of the image in that layer. Now it should appear to fade out.
Touch Up The Mask
Select your paint brush too while still in the mask layer and select a round brush with 50% hardness - or whatever works for you - and paint in the mask until it looks more natural. Be sure not to go all the way to the right edge otherwise it won't repeat seamlessly anymore.
Merge Layers
Select your new layer and merge it down. You do this by selecting "layer" then "merge down" at the top of your screen.
Trim Image
Trim the transparent pixels by clicking "image" then "trim..." A new dialog box will appear. Select "transparent pixels" and be sure all boxes at the bottom are checked.
Repeat Steps 2 - 9
Now we're going to the the same steps for the vertical aspect. Select a
piece of the top from left to right and cut and paste. Align the new layer to the bottom and fade it out to blend with the inside of the image. Merge down and trim the transparent pixels. Save. Now you have a repeating image!
Define And Test
Define it as a pattern by clicking "edit" then "define pattern..." and test it out!
